1. Ingredients -

ü The materials present in our food are called as ingredients.

ü For example you have Boiled Rice, to prepare it you need water and rice only. So two ingredients namely water and rice are present in boiled rice.

ü Another example is vegetable curry. To prepare it you need water, vegetable, oil, salt and other spices. So vegetable curry consist of many gradients like water, vegetable, oil, salt and spices.

ü The ingredients that we use in our food mainly come from plants and animals. The plants and animals from where the ingredients come from are called as source of ingredients or source of food.

ü Some of the ingredients do not come from plants or animals but they come from non living (abiotic) surroundings called nature. Example salt comes from rocks and sea and. Water comes from river and pond.

ü Plants are the sources of food ingredients like grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits.

ü Animals provide us with milk, meat products and eggs. Cows, goats and buffaloes are some common animals which give us milk. Milk and milk products like butter, cream, cheese and curd are used all over the world.

2. Edible And Non Edible -

ü The part of plants or the parts of animals that we can eat are called as edible while the parts of plants and the parts of animals that we can not eat are called as non edible.


 3. Nectar

ü The sweet juice of plants that bees collect to prepare honey is called as nectar.

4. Types Of Animals Based On Food Habits -

ü Based on food that animals eat, the animals are categorized as herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.

ü Herbivore eats only plant and plant products. Example - Deer, Cow etc.

ü Carnivore eats only animals and their parts. Example - Loin, Tiger etc.

ü Omnivore eats both plants and animals. Example - Human, Dog etc.
